You may have heard that coconut oil is bad for you because of its high levels of saturated fats. But research is showing us the benefits of coconut oil every day.

Saturated fatty acids: Most of them are medium chain triglycerides, which digest easily and are utilized for energy production in the body’s systems and do not contribute to cholesterol.

  • Lauric makes up more than 50% of the total fatty acids. The human body uses lauric acid as an energy source, increasing metabolism. Lauric acid is also known as monolaurin in it pure form and can be helpful in fighting viruses.
  • Capric acid (about 10%) is a medium-chain triglycerides with antimicrobial activity.
  • Caprylic acid (about (9%) another medium-chain triglyceride is a powerful antimicrobial and antifungal.
  • Polyphenols are minor components which give the coconut its smell and taste.

Not all saturated fats act in the body the same way. Medium to short chain fatty acids have been shown to have health promoting benefits, some of which are:

  • increased metabolism
  • antiviral activity
  • Immunity boosting
  • Anti-candida / antifungal

Nutrition: A few spoonfuls a day are all that is needed for the health benefits of coconut oil. Good on popcorn, salads, on toast as a butter replacement. Many people are even stiring it in there coffee.
